The Young and Misguided Part Three

In the past one week i have had the rare and unfortunate privilege of meeting some undergraduates of our universities here in the South East and from the first meeting with them, I concluded thus:
"If these are the examples of the leaders of tommorow, I feel its better we allow the old ones rule till they die". After all, Queen Elizabeth still reigns with her son a grandfather and a Prince George just arriving, from the looks of things nothing spoil! The United Kingdom and its former colonies still thrive well.

My encounter brings to my attention what really goes down within the four walls of the average educational institution.....lets think of a state or federal owned College of Education. What can we say happens there? Learning? What of Polytechnics which were established purely for technical skill? How many technicians and/or technical strategists have we delivered into the experience pool of the job market? State Universities? Federal Universities? Are those the "institutions" that produce the same kind of undergraduates who came to my office for a six month internship supposedly nearing their finals but unable to define or explain basic rudiments of their fields of study? Are these the ones an employer will task with an interview and they end up fumbling or not even delivering at all?

What is the purpose of going to school? Education for Life or Certificate for Jobs? Whats the use of study? The use of National Service? The Use of Job hunting or interviews when simply by dialing a politician-relative, a quick contract is awarded? No stress! Whats the use of preparing yourself and being a woman of integrity and honor when one night with a well connected, sex starved big boy could change your life at least for a while? Whats the use? Who wants to suffer like our parents did?

I predict, and surely i do not stand alone when I say that in 20-30 years to come, most of the wives married to Nigerian will be half baked graduates who most probably will not be able to gain employment or even be independent and economically empowered. Why? Nobody is taking knowledge seriously! For the men, it is a more scary prediction. Eventually, only a few knowledgeable individuals will run the economy, entrepreneurs will return home from the diaspora; entry visas to foriegn countries will be restricted to the few industrious ones and there will be a visible divide between the KNOWS and KNOW NOTS.

Can we step out or avoid this calamity? Only with a change in mindset! Only with the right attitude by those who stand ahead of us. Things can actually change with the commitment of everyone. It will just take one generation at a time. Till then, lets pray our future never falls in the hands of the "Young and Misguided"
